Matthias Kaiser (Dr. phil.; philosophy, University of Frankfurt, after studies at the universities of LMU Munich, Frankfurt a.M., Oslo, and Stanford) is Professor at and Director of the Centre for the Study of Science and the Humanities (SVT) at the University of Bergen since March 2011. Before that he was Director of the National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) since 1991. He holds acknowledged competence as full professor in philosophy of science since 1996. Previously he was adjunct professor on a part-time basis at the SVT (2008-11) and until 2006 he was adjunct professor for philosophy of science in the doctoral education program at the College of Architecture (AHO) in Oslo. His main work and areas of expertise are in the fields of philosophy of science, ethics of science, food ethics, and technology assessment. His areas of competence include social studies of science and technology, history of science, ethics, logic, and history of philosophy. For many years Kaiser's research activities have taken place in a multi- and inter-disciplinary environment. Due to his previous position at NENT he is familiar with matters of science and technology policy, and he has built up competence in the field of scientific integrity. Through detailed case studies he has furthermore considerable insights in diverse fields of science, such as the history of plate tectonics, aquaculture, and biotechnology. Another topic of detailed study is the Precautionary Principle. His leading role in the conduct of three Norwegian consensus conferences has led to a special interest in participatory methods, among others publishing on the use of the ethical matrix. He has (co-)published four books, co-edited two further books, written several committee studies (including ethical guidelines) and project reports and edited three thematic issues of scientific journals. Google Scholar lists him with 149 publications, 854 citations, an h-index of 15 and i10index of 22 (accessed 30/1-2016). He is Co-Editor-in-chief for: Food Ethics – The journal of the Societies for Agricultural and Food Ethics, (Springer Publishers) appearing in 2016. Most publications are in English or in Norwegian, some in German or French, and some are translated into Russian, Chinese, and Serbo-Croatian. Kaiser has been main supervisor for several successful doctoral students and is currently main supervisor for two doctoral students. Kaiser has an extensive international network of academic contacts both from within his own field of training, and from many others. As the current President he is actively engaged in the European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EurSafe). He has close connections to relevant activities inside The International Council for Science (ICSU, Paris) and UNESCO. During 1996-2002 he was Chair of ICSU’s Standing Committee on Responsibility and Ethics in Science (SCRES). He was the appointed Norwegian representative in an OECD working group on Facilitating Research Misconduct Investigations. He has lectured in many universities and institutes around Europe and other countries (e.g. USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brasil, Australia, Taiwan, China, Russia, India). By invitation of the President of Portugal, Kaiser lectured on participation in environmental policy in Lisbon. The government of Argentina invited him to assist the work of the Argentinian Committee on the Ethics of Science and Technology (CECTE). He is often consulted for expert meetings or review of projects by the Nordic Council of Ministers, the EU, the Council of Europe, The European Science Foundation, and the National Science Foundation (US).
